My Sharona is the debut single by The Knack. It reached Number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1979 and stayed there for 6 weeks.

The riff in the intro and the verse is alternating between the 6th and 4th string (G) and then ending on the chords C and Eb. Repeat once.

Then the first two bars of the riff alternating between the 6th and 4th string (G) is repeated and then building up with chord Bb.

At last the chords C, Eb and F.

Workout #3: Stationary bike

Yesterday I attended the 55 minutes long cycling class after work.

Tips: Raise the handlebars and adjust the height of the bike seat before the lesson and the resistance of the cycling wheel appropriately during the lesson. Don’t forget to bring a small towel (because you are going to sweat after 20-30 minutes) and a bottle of water.

Workout #1: Treadmill

I have just begun to eat healthier and to exercise regularily at my local fitness center.

I will document my progress in a series of posts.

I usually wake up at 05:30am, read until 06:15am, get in the shower for 15 minutes and eat for another 15 minutes. Then I go to the gym.

At the gym I start by warming up for 5 minutes at 9-10 speed on the treadmill.

Today I did a test on the treadmill where I was going to run 1 km as fast as possible. Results will be posted later…

Review #1: Google Nexus 10

Nexus 10

Nexus 10 was launched by Google and manufactured by Samsung in late 2012.

The Nexus 10 is my first Android tablet and comes with a 10.6-inch screen and Wifi-only network connectivity.

I bought the Nexus 10 for 3090 NOK from cdon.no and it arrived in the local post office after 3 days.

The CPU is a Dual Core AMR Cortex-A15 processor operating at 1,7 GHz. The graphics processor is a Quad Core Mali T604. The internal storage is 16 GB.

The 10.6-inch screen resolution is 2560-by-1600 (300ppi), so it can display video in 1080p.

There is no home button below the screen like there is on the iPad. The home button is on the top-right corner. The volume buttons are functioning opposite of the iPad. The lowest button increases the volume and the highest button decreases the volume.

The Nexus 10 tablet comes with Android 4.2, but is upgradeable to Android 4.3 and 4.4.2 in two cycles. From Google Play it is possible to install most Android apps such as Firefox, Gmail, Google Maps, Facebook, Dropbox, Netflix and NRK TV. I couldn’t install Spotify directly from Google Play, so I had to visit http://m.spotify.com/ in order to install the APK file manually.

I was not able to find an official Samsung remote control app for my Samsung TV, but I installed Smart TV Remote which sort of works, although the user interface is cluttered.

There is a Micro USB charging socket and Micro-HDMI socket, and a 3.5 head phone jack.

Video recording is possible in 1080p with the rear camera and in 720p with the front camera.

I would give this tablet 3 of 5 stars.

Lesson #4: Kåre and The Cavemen – Filadelfia

Photo: yayimages.com
Photo: yayimages.com

Filadelfia was released on the Kåre and The Cavemen album Long Day’s Flight ’till Tomorrow (1999).

The guitar techniques Hammer-ons and Pull-offs are used in the main riff in this song.  The terms hammer-on and pull-off were invented and popularized by Pete Seeger in his book How to Play the 5-String Banjo.

Pull-offs: Bar the strings on the 7th fret with your 1st finger on your left hand and hold down the 3rd string on the 9th fret with your 3rd finger on your left hand, and pick the note as usual with your thumb on your right hand.  Then pluck the 3rd string with the 3rd finger on your left hand at 9th fret on the fretboard, so the 3rd string now vibrates on the 7th fret.  Repeat this pattern on the 4th string twice.

Hammer-ons: Bar the strings on the 7th fret with your 1st finger on your left hand and then pick the note as usual with your thumb on your right hand.  Then bring down your 2nd finger on your left hand on the 8th fret on the 3rd string, the quite opposite of the pull-off.

Chorus: The first 4 strumming chords are played on the 7th fret: B, (bar 7), Ama9/B and (bar 7). The next 4 strumming chords in the chorus are played on the 5th fret: A, (bar 5), Gma9/A and (bar 5).

Lesson #3: Band of Horses – The Funeral

Photo: yayimages.com

The Funeral on Band of Horses’ debut album Everything All the Time was released in 2006 and was named the 67th-greatest song of the 2000s by Pitchfork in 2009.

The song is divided into three parts: intro, verses and bridge.

The 1st bar in the intro is in time signature 4/4 with a melody that starts with Ab on the 11th fret and repeats with Eb on the 6th fret. In the 2nd bar the time signature changes to 6/4 where the melody is played as Bb on the 1st fret and then repeated twice in Cm on the 3rd fret.

The strumming chords in the verses are Ab, Eb, Bb and Cm as in the intro, but the time signatures are switched to 6/4 in the 1st bar and then 4/4 in the 2nd bar. The second time the verses is repeated, the melody is played in the 2nd bar on the 5th string.

In the bridge the time signature is 6/4 and the chords are Bb, Eb and Ab.

Lesson #2: The Surfaris – Wipe Out (TAB)

The surf rock hit Wipe Out by The Surfaris is quite easy to master on the guitar. The song was written by Bob BerryhillPat ConnollyJim Fuller and Ron Wilson and recorded by The Surfaris in 1963.

The melody starts on the 9th fret on the 5th string, then on the 7th, 8th and 9th fret on the 4th string and this repeats three times. Then the same melody line is repeated on the 4th and 3rd string four times, before it goes up two frets to the 11th fret and is alternated. Then there is a bridge with B, E, B, F#, E, B, F#, and the melody starts all over again.

I found a video for the song with a compilation of scenes from some 60′s beach movies. The opening of the video includes Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.
